Prayer For “Soul Mates: The Secret of Priority”

This is a brief post for folks who asked me to post the prayer I mentioned at Christ Community this weekend.

The book I mentioned is: Marriage on the Rock by Jimmy Evans. It comes recommended by Dallas Willard and Os Guinness and others. You can get it at the “Marriage Today” website. Just click here: Marriage on the Rock

  1. Larry, thanks for the message yesterday. As I was listening I thought of this verse:

    16 To the woman he said,
    “I will greatly increase your pains in childbearing;
    with pain you will give birth to children.
    Your desire will be for your husband,
    and he will rule over you.”

    Specifically “your desire will be for your husband” I’ve always read that as something like, “I will no longer be your first priority, your man will be” and in context this looks to be a “curse” or as that word seems a bit odd, at least a result of their sin that is carried on to this day.

    My thought is that this idea of mixed up priorities, isn’t just a passive thing that somehow happens by accident, but is an active thing that is a result of sin, and must be fought against.

    Obviously this isn’t just a problem with women and their men, as the entire bible and my life for that matter can atest.

    Do you have any thoughts on this specific verse and how it may or may not relate to your message?

  2. great sernon yesterday, Pastor L! Especially liked the shotgun story.
    “Two in the tube and one in the chamber”. Made me laugh.

  3. Hey Mike, Here’s my very slow response to your most excellent question. The verse you quote is from Genesis 3, the following chapter. It takes place after the fall and I agree with you that this is describing something that is the result of sin entering into male female relationships. The word “desire” is found again in the following chapter Gen. 4:7 If you do what is right, will you not be accepted? But if you do not do what is right, sin is crouching at your door; it desires to have you, but you must master it.” This is the closest occurrence of the same word and it describes sin desiring to master Cain. I think you are right about messed up priorities. The woman will desire her husband in the sense of wanting to master him, he in turn, instead of leading as a loving husband will try to rule over her in an oppressive manner. Everything will be messed up and yes we should fight against that.
